TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR HANS GABOR

He was the driving force behind the Vienna Kammeroper for years. He was the founder of the Internationally acclaimed  Belvedere vocal competition which still carries on in his name. He gave young, unknown singers a chance to begin their careers and expose them to the operatic experience as well as the Vienna cultural scene. He could be a bastard. He paid the absolute minimum for his singers and musicians ... and less ... yet demanded nothing less than Staatsoper quality. Young singers would sing demanding operatic roles many times a week with no more than one day rest in between.  Somehow we got along very well. He also gave me my first chance to direct an opera. ( Mozart's DIE ENTFÜHRUNG ) and invited me back many times to take over directing operas that George Tabori would cancel.  He's gone now for many years, but those who know Vienna, the Belvedere Competition, and the Wiener Kammeroper, will long only be able to associate these things with Prof. Hans Gabor.
