When it was built in 1913, the People's Hall (then known as Century Hall, Hala Stulecia in Polish) was really something. Max Berg, the renowned Modernist architect, designed the building to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig. At the time of it’s creation, it was the largest domes arena in the world. A marvel or architecture. The acoustics in the 18,000-seat hall are excellent. (the late Pope spoke here in May 1997).For many years it was also the home to a thriving movie studio complex. On the grounds are a massive man-made pond and covered walkway just made for a Sunday stroll. The 96m high needle built in 1948 was a 'gift from the Soviet people.'
